New Study Reveals Broader Appeal of Ukraine Pilgrimage Site

MaarivCenter

The story · English

A recent study by the Israel Democracy Institute has challenged common perceptions about pilgrimages to Uman, Ukraine, the burial site of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov. The research found that 8% of adult Jews in Israel have visited Uman, with a significant majority, 59%, making the trip outside of the Rosh Hashanah holiday. This indicates a broader appeal beyond the traditional High Holiday pilgrimage.

Further findings reveal that over a fifth of visitors are secular, and the number of women visiting is nearly equal to that of men. While 41% of Israelis visit Uman for Rosh Hashanah, only 26% visit exclusively for the holiday, and 15% visit both during Rosh Hashanah and at other times. The study noted a stark gender difference in timing: 55% of male visitors go for Rosh Hashanah, whereas 77% of female visitors go at other times of the year. This disparity is partly attributed to opposition from some Breslov rabbis to women visiting on Rosh Hashanah and the closure of the women's section during the holiday, alongside the rise of organized spiritual and women-led tours at other times.

Examining ethnic backgrounds, the study found that 13% of Mizrahi (Eastern) Jews have visited Uman, a significantly higher rate than Ashkenazi (5%) or those of mixed heritage (4%). Researchers suggest this connection stems from a long-standing tradition among Mizrahi Jews of visiting the graves of righteous figures and a widespread adoption of Breslov teachings.

The research also indicated that younger individuals and those with lower incomes are more likely to visit Uman, further diversifying the profile of pilgrims.
