Haifa Named World's Happiest City Among Israeli Municipalities

Haifa has been recognized as the sole Israeli city to be included in the latest ranking of the world's happiest cities, compiled by the British Quality of Life Institute. While making the list, Haifa did not secure a top position, ranking 187th out of 251 evaluated municipalities. The study initially considered 3,400 cities globally, including 25 from Israel. However, most were excluded due to insufficient statistical data, narrowing the focus to 1,000 cities for detailed analysis, and finally to 251 for the final ranking.

The researchers utilized 64 objective indicators, such as life expectancy, GDP per capita, psychiatrist availability, and crime rates, to compile the list, avoiding subjective resident opinions. Jerusalem was initially considered alongside Haifa but was removed after further data verification. Despite its 187th place, Haifa outperformed major global cities like London (193rd) and New York (250th).

Haifa demonstrated strong performance in several areas, exceeding global averages in innovation, higher education levels, foreign language proficiency, home care for the elderly, and employment in creative professions. Conversely, the city faces challenges including high education costs, overcrowded classrooms, air pollution, and relatively low waste recycling rates. The report also notes a shift in criteria for 'happy cities' since 2026, emphasizing daily comfort and convenience over tourism or wealth.
