Israel's Budget Deficit Shrinks as Tax Revenues Surge

Israel's Ministry of Finance reported a significant reduction in the national budget deficit for August, driven by a substantial increase in tax revenues. The monthly deficit for August stood at approximately 7.9 billion shekels, a notable decrease from the 9.6 billion shekels recorded in August of the previous year. This improvement has led to a contraction in the cumulative 12-month deficit, which now stands at about 3.2% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), down by 0.1 percentage points.

The primary driver behind this fiscal improvement is a sharp rise in state revenues. In August alone, tax collections reached approximately 47.9 billion shekels. Year-to-date, cumulative revenues have soared to 410.1 billion shekels, marking an 11.5% increase compared to the same period last year, when revenues totaled 367.7 billion shekels.

Government expenditures in August were recorded at roughly 55.7 billion shekels. For the year to date, total government spending amounted to approximately 429.3 billion shekels, representing a modest increase of only 3.6% from the 414.5 billion shekels spent during the corresponding period in the prior year. The faster pace of revenue growth relative to expenditure increases is credited with shrinking the public budget deficit.
