Azerbaijan Becomes Top Israeli Travel Destination Amid Turkey Tensions

Azerbaijan, particularly its capital Baku, is rapidly emerging as a favored destination for Israeli tourists, replacing Turkey's traditional appeal. This shift is driven by ongoing diplomatic tensions between Israel and Turkey, making Azerbaijan a more accessible and welcoming alternative. Direct flights between Israel and Baku have increased to approximately 30 per week, operated by multiple airlines, with Azerbaijani authorities keen to expand services due to high demand.

Official statistics reveal a significant surge in Israeli visitors. From the beginning of 2026 until the end of July, around 42,000 Israelis visited Azerbaijan, constituting 3.1% of all foreign tourists and placing Israel among Azerbaijan's top ten source markets. Israelis also accounted for a disproportionately high number of hotel stays, making up 6.9% of foreign tourist nights in the first half of the year. Spending by Israeli visitors also saw a substantial increase, with approximately $47 million spent in the first seven months of the year, a rise of over 50% compared to the same period in 2025.

Rabbi Zamir Isayev, the chief rabbi of the Sephardic community in Baku, highlighted the welcoming atmosphere for Israelis and Jews in Azerbaijan. He noted that Israelis feel secure, can openly practice their faith, and are made to feel welcome. The local Jewish community is thriving, with growing numbers in schools and increased activity in synagogues and kosher restaurants, especially in anticipation of the High Holidays.

Despite the close ties, Rabbi Isayev pointed out occasional bewilderment in Baku regarding certain Israeli political actions, such as parliamentary attempts to recognize the Armenian genocide or travel advisories that include Azerbaijan. He emphasized that Azerbaijan views Israel as a strategic partner and desires to maintain stable relations between Israel and Turkey, acting as a potential mediator during this tense period. Azerbaijan's unique position allows it to foster strong ties with both Israel and Turkey, which it considers friendly nations, aiming to prevent unnecessary conflict.

The Jewish community in Baku is preparing for an influx of Israeli visitors for the High Holidays, organizing prayers, festive meals, and ensuring the availability of kosher food. Hundreds of sets of the Four Species for Sukkot are also expected to arrive from Israel, funded by an anonymous US-based donor, underscoring the strong connection between the communities.
