Artists Withdraw From Lisbon Festival Over Jerry Seinfeld's Pro-Israel Stance

A number of Portuguese artists have withdrawn from the upcoming MEO Commedia a La Carte Fest in Lisbon, citing the participation of American comedian Jerry Seinfeld and his vocal support for Israel. Seinfeld, a prominent supporter of Israel since the October 7th Hamas attacks, is the festival's biggest draw.

The festival, scheduled for late October, will feature comedy, theater, and music performances. Seinfeld is slated to headline the event on November 1st at the MEO Arena. However, the festival is facing controversy and a shrinking lineup due to Seinfeld's pro-Israel activism.

Actress and comedian Inês Aires Pereira was among the first to withdraw, stating she refused to "normalize genocide." While not naming Seinfeld directly, she explained her decision was due to a participant whose "ideas and actions I consider indefensible."

Comedy duo Cebola Mol also announced their withdrawal, posting an illustration of a watermelon, a symbol of Palestinian support, alongside their announcement. Other singers and artists have also pulled out, though some have not publicly stated their reasons for leaving.

Despite the growing protests and calls for a boycott, the festival organizers have not yet announced any changes to the lineup. Seinfeld's public support for Israel includes a visit in December 2023 to meet with families of hostages and past controversial statements equating the "Free Palestine" slogan with antisemitism.
