Israel Explores Alternative International Force for Lebanon Amidst Escalating Tensions

Israel is considering the deployment of a temporary international verification force in Lebanon before the current UN peacekeeping mission, UNIFIL, concludes its mandate at the end of the year. This initiative aims to prevent a power vacuum in southern Lebanon and preempt the UN from maintaining a significant presence there after UNIFIL's withdrawal.

The operational mandate for UNIFIL is set to expire on December 31st, after which the force is expected to cease its operations and begin a phased withdrawal. Israeli officials are keen to avoid a scenario where no alternative force is ready to step in, fearing that the UN might exploit the absence of a replacement to extend its existing presence or establish a new framework for continued influence in southern Lebanon.

To ensure continuity, Israel is exploring the possibility of introducing a temporary international verification force even before UNIFIL's mandate ends, allowing it to begin operations in advance and provide a seamless transition. Potential countries being considered for this role include Greece, Switzerland, Italy, and Indonesia.

However, Israel has already disqualified France, Spain, Turkey, and the United Kingdom from participating. The criterion for exclusion is any country that actively opposes Israel on the international stage, whether through legislation, diplomatic actions, or proceedings in international courts, deeming them unsuitable for involvement in security mechanisms that directly impact Israeli interests.

This move comes amid rising tensions in southern Lebanon and ongoing efforts to disarm Hezbollah and bolster the Lebanese army's responsibilities in the region. Indirect negotiations between Israel and Lebanon are reportedly set to resume next week, with the post-UNIFIL verification mechanism and security arrangements expected to be a key topic.
