Lebanon Urges UN Peacekeeper Mandate Extension, Clashing With Israel

Lebanon has formally requested the United Nations Security Council to extend the mandate of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), whose mission is set to expire at the end of 2026. In a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Lebanon's UN Ambassador Ahmed Arafa expressed support for continuing UNIFIL's presence, arguing that its termination would be premature and could create a security vacuum in southern Lebanon. Lebanon believes UNIFIL plays a crucial role in maintaining security and stability and assisting the Lebanese Armed Forces.

This stance directly contradicts Israel's position, which opposes the extension of UNIFIL's mandate. Israel's UN Ambassador, Danny Danon, stated that UNIFIL has failed in its mission for years, particularly in preventing Hezbollah's armament in southern Lebanon. Israel maintains that the decision to end the mandate has already been made and that the remaining time should focus on enforcing Resolution 1701 and disarming Hezbollah, with responsibility then shifting to the Lebanese government and army.

France and other European nations have indicated support for extending UNIFIL's mandate, with France reportedly raising the possibility in a closed Security Council session. However, the US Ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, has voiced opposition to the extension. Russia and China have not yet commented on the issue.

Amidst these diverging views on UNIFIL, Israel and the United States are coordinating their efforts to disband the force. Discussions are also underway between Israel, Lebanon, and the US regarding the establishment of an alternative international force to operate in southern Lebanon. Potential participating countries mentioned include Italy, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Indonesia, with Italy reportedly willing to take a leading role. Israel has stated it will not permit countries hostile to it to be part of this new force.
