Panathinaikos to Host 7 of First 8 EuroLeague Games Due to Olympiacos' Arena Issues
Panathinaikos will begin the upcoming EuroLeague season with an unusual advantage, hosting seven of their first eight games at home. This scheduling quirk is reportedly due to renovations at Olympiacos' Peace and Friendship Stadium, which has led the team to request and receive approval from the EuroLeague to play a majority of their early season games on the road.
The decision was made to avoid a situation where both Greek teams, Panathinaikos and Olympiacos, would be hosting games in consecutive rounds. According to local media reports, this would not serve the broadcast schedules of the league or its Greek broadcaster, Nova. Consequently, Panathinaikos benefits from a long home stand while Olympiacos will spend their initial months of the season traveling.
Olympiacos is expected to play their early home games at the arena of AEK Athens. The scheduling also impacts Israeli teams Maccabi Tel Aviv and Hapoel Tel Aviv, who are listed among Panathinaikos' early home opponents.
