Panathinaikos to Host 7 of First 8 EuroLeague Games Due to Olympiacos's Schedule
Panathinaikos is set to begin the upcoming EuroLeague basketball season with an unusually high number of home games, hosting seven of their first eight matchups at OAKA Arena. This scheduling quirk is reportedly due to a request made by rival Greek team Olympiacos.
According to local media reports, Olympiacos asked the EuroLeague to allow them to play a majority of their early-season games on the road. This request was approved because of renovations and construction work at the Peace and Friendship Stadium, Olympiacos's home arena. The EuroLeague and the Greek broadcaster Nova sought to avoid a situation where both Greek teams, Panathinaikos and Olympiacos, would be hosting games consecutively in the same rounds.
To prevent scheduling conflicts and ensure better broadcast coverage in Greece, the league arranged for Panathinaikos to have a concentrated run of home games while Olympiacos will spend most of the initial months of the season traveling. Olympiacos will play their home games early in the season at the AEK Athens arena when they do host.
Panathinaikos's early schedule includes home games against Paris, Villeurbanne, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Fenerbahce, Hapoel Tel Aviv, Baskonia, and Milan, with one away game against Partizan. Olympiacos's early schedule features road games against Baskonia, Zalgiris, Virtus Bologna, Valencia, and Besiktas, and home games against Anadolu Efes and Fenerbahce.
