Conflicting Messages Emerge Over Sea of Galilee Swimming Amid Health Warnings

A public health scare has emerged around swimming in the Sea of Galilee ahead of the High Holidays, following the hospitalization of a nine-year-old boy in very serious condition due to infection with the "brain-eating amoeba," Naegleria fowleri. The boy was reportedly infected after swimming at the Kursi beach.

In response, the Ministry of Health issued rare recommendations for swimmers, including using nose plugs, avoiding diving or jumping into the water, and minimizing submerging the head. These guidelines significantly restrict typical swimming activities, particularly for families and children.

Despite the warnings, the Mayor of Tiberias and Chairman of the Kinneret Cities Association, Yossi Ben-David, stated that there is no directive to close the beaches. He emphasized that hotels, resorts, and campgrounds are prepared for thousands of guests during the holidays and expressed hope that visitors will come and enjoy themselves.

The local tourism sector also reported no cancellations for the holidays and near-full occupancy, attributing this to efforts to prevent panic and highlighting the extreme rarity of such infections. However, the discrepancy between the Ministry of Health's cautionary advice and the local authorities' reassuring messages has drawn criticism. Critics argue that the "business as usual" approach might downplay the severity of the recommendations for families visiting the lake, given the rare disease's high mortality rate.
