Over 20,000 Immigrants Arrive in Israel Amid Security Challenges

Despite a complex security situation, more than 20,000 new immigrants from approximately 100 countries chose to make aliyah (immigrate) to Israel during the past Hebrew year, תשפ"ו. Data released jointly by the Ministry of Aliyah and Integration and the Jewish Agency reveals that Russia led the countries of origin with 5,685 immigrants, followed by France with 4,364, the United States with 3,333, and the United Kingdom with 975.

Significant numbers also arrived from Ukraine (797), Belarus (491), Canada (440), Australia (247), Argentina (243), Georgia (241), South Africa (210), Germany (210), and Brazil (200). The Ministry noted a notable increase in interest from Western countries, with over 28,000 individuals worldwide opening immigration files. Specifically, Australia saw an 89.7% surge in file openings, with the UK up 68% and France by 31.5%.

Minister of Aliyah and Integration Ofir Sofer highlighted this trend, alongside global antisemitic incidents, as a national opportunity that should not be missed. Tel Aviv absorbed the largest number of new immigrants, 2,762, followed by Netanya with 2,224, Jerusalem with 2,134, and Haifa with 1,504. Other cities like Ra'anana, Bat Yam, Ashdod, Beit Shemesh, Ashkelon, and Rishon LeZion also welcomed hundreds of new arrivals.

Demographic data indicates that 35% of the immigrants are young adults aged 18 to 35, and 24% are children and teenagers. In terms of integration, 414 immigrant doctors joined the healthcare system this year. Roughly one-third of all immigrants were absorbed in communities north of Hadera or south of the southern kibbutzim and the city of Ashdod. Chairman of the Jewish Agency, Doron Almog, welcomed the immigrants, calling their arrival a profound expression of faith in the country's future.
