Prison Service Promotes Commander Amid Police Appointment Disputes

While senior promotion disputes continue to plague the Israel Police, the Israel Prison Service (IPS) is proceeding with filling its command positions. Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir approved the recommendation of IPS Commissioner Kobi Yaacobi to appoint Superintendent Miki Bar Yehuda as commander of the Nachshon Unit. Bar Yehuda will be promoted to the rank of Assistant Commissioner following this appointment. This move highlights a stark difference in how the two security organizations, both under the Ministry of National Security, are handling leadership changes.

Superintendent Bar Yehuda brings extensive operational experience from various key roles in law enforcement and security. His background includes combat and operational experience in the counter-terrorism special unit (YAMAM), service as an officer in the Coastal District's Central Unit (YAMAR) of the police, and command of the IPS's elite operational unit, the Metzada Unit. His transition to commanding the Nachshon Unit has received swift backing from both professional command and the minister.

In contrast, the police continue to face legal hurdles and delays in approving senior appointments. The ongoing controversy surrounding the involvement of the Attorney General, Gali Baharav-Miara, has stalled progress within the police force's leadership pipeline.
