Smotrich Courts Sderot Mayor for Election List, Offer Rejected

Bezalel Smotrich, chairman of the Religious Zionism party, met with Sderot Mayor Alon Davidi last Friday and offered him a spot on his party's list for the upcoming elections. Davidi has so far refused the offer and is not willing to join Smotrich, who has until Tuesday at 10 PM to submit his final list.

Davidi has been a target for Smotrich for some time, as the Religious Zionism leader seeks to broaden his party's appeal beyond its traditional base. Sources within the Religious Zionism party view Davidi as a significant electoral asset. He is a well-known mayor from the southern city of Sderot, strongly identified with the area and its security challenges facing Gaza, and is recognized within the national-religious community without being exclusively tied to settlements in Judea and Samaria. His potential addition could help Smotrich strengthen the party's presence in the periphery and among the traditional right-wing electorate.

In a separate development, Beersheba Mayor Rubik Danilovich reportedly rejected a high placement offer on the Likud party's list for the upcoming elections. Danilovich, who has served as Beersheba's mayor for 18 years, has previously turned down political offers from various centrist and right-wing parties, choosing to remain in his current role.
