Beersheba Mayor Rejects Top Likud Offer for Knesset Seat

The story · English

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's efforts to recruit prominent figures for the Likud party's Knesset list ahead of the upcoming elections have hit a snag. Beersheba Mayor Rubik Daniilovich was reportedly offered the third spot on the Likud list, with the promise of a senior ministerial position and deputy prime minister role should a government be formed. This is not the first time Netanyahu has attempted to bring Daniilovich into the Likud fold.

While Daniilovich did not immediately reject the offer this time, as he had with previous proposals, he was inclined not to accept. He reportedly considered the offer overnight and was asked by those close to Netanyahu to take additional time for deliberation. Ultimately, Daniilovich definitively declined the offer.

Netanyahu is also reportedly seeking to recruit other prominent local government leaders, including Modi'in-Maccabim-Re'ut Mayor Chaim Bibas and Dimona Mayor Beni Biton, to join the Likud list. However, these recruitment efforts have also not yet yielded results.
