Sderot Mayor and Finance Minister Smotrich Exchange Praise Amid Speculation of Political Alliance
Alon Davidi, the mayor of Sderot, publicly praised Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich during the latter's visit to a Hesder Yeshiva in Sderot on Monday. Davidi commended Smotrich for his decisive role in the ongoing conflict, specifically highlighting his efforts to push enemy forces three to four kilometers away from the city. He described Smotrich as a "friend of the periphery and the people of Israel."
In response, Smotrich also lauded Davidi, calling him one of the most talented and professional local leaders he has encountered in his 11 years in politics, including four years as finance minister. The mutual compliments have sparked speculation about a potential political partnership, with suggestions that Davidi might join the Religious Zionism party in the upcoming 2026 elections.
Davidi emphasized Smotrich's steadfastness during the war, noting that despite concerns from opposition and media about the situation in Gaza and along the Israel-Lebanon border, Smotrich maintained a firm stance. He credited Smotrich with ensuring that the hostage deal coincided with a significant military achievement, reinforcing Israel's security near Sderot.
The exchange of praise between the two figures, both influential in their respective roles, has drawn attention to possible future political collaborations ahead of the next Knesset elections.
