Israel's Water Sector Faces Challenges Amid Desalination Plant Shutdowns
Israel's water management system has undergone significant evolution since the country's establishment, moving from large-scale water projects and the national water carrier to incorporating recycled wastewater (effluent) for agriculture and industry starting in the 1980s. As the population and quality of life increased, so did water consumption, prompting Israel to develop additional water sources. Since the 2000s, desalination has become a key method for producing drinking water.
Desalination involves two main stages: removing solids and the crucial membrane stage. Membranes act as physical barriers with microscopic pores that allow only water molecules to pass through under high pressure generated by pumps. Recently, five out of six major desalination facilities were temporarily shut down. Despite these shutdowns, the national water system did not fail, with services only reduced and the majority of the population continuing to receive water for essential needs like drinking, cleaning, and showering.
Professor Ofir Menashe, head of the Water Industry Engineering program at Kinneret Academic College, explained that the recent disruptions, while impactful, did not lead to a complete system collapse.
