New Jerusalem Neighborhoods Rise With Thousands of Homes and Light Rail

Southern Jerusalem is undergoing a significant urban transformation, with the development of new neighborhoods like Givat HaMatos and the renewal of Talpiot, creating a new, large urban center. The area, once considered a periphery, is now a focal point of city development, marked by numerous construction cranes, new roads, and expanding light rail infrastructure.

Givat HaMatos, a completely new neighborhood, is being built from scratch on a rare piece of undeveloped land, slated to include thousands of housing units and public buildings. City engineer Yoel Even highlighted its strategic location, offering views of both the Judean Desert and Jerusalem. The development includes advanced transportation networks, such as the Blue Line of the light rail expected by 2028, underground connections to Highway 16, and plans to extend the high-speed train.

Meanwhile, the Arnona slopes neighborhood is rapidly populating, with around 300 families already residing there and an additional 700 expected this summer, aiming for a total of 1,900 households. This neighborhood features a young demographic, a mix of religious and secular residents, diverse housing options including government-subsidized apartments, parks, and commercial facilities. Educational institutions, including new kindergartens and elementary schools, are being established to support the growing community.

The development is attracting not only young Israeli couples but also new immigrants, such as Hava and Avraham Cohen from Florida, who recently moved to Arnona slopes. They cited a deep sense of mission and the events of October 7th as catalysts for their move. The couple found an attractive apartment with a view at a reasonable price and expressed optimism about the neighborhood's future, noting the city's investment in infrastructure and the diverse community being formed.
