Health Ministry Advises Kinneret Swimmers on Amoeba Risk
Israel's Ministry of Health has updated its recommendations for the public following the confirmation of another case of infection with the Naegleria fowleri amoeba in the Sea of Galilee (Kinneret). The ministry is advising swimmers to use nose plugs, avoid diving or submerging their heads underwater, and refrain from activities that force water into the nose under pressure.
Naegleria fowleri is a rare but severe and life-threatening amoeba. Infection occurs when water enters the nose, and the disease cannot be transmitted through drinking water or from person to person. Since 2022, four cases of infection with this amoeba have been diagnosed in Israel.
