Israeli Sailor Embarks on Historic Solo Circumnavigation Race
Israeli sailor Daniel Pinski is set to begin the 2026 Golden Globe Race today, becoming the first Israeli to compete in the prestigious solo, non-stop, round-the-world sailing event. He will depart from the French port of Les Sables-d'Olonne for a 250-day voyage.
The Golden Globe Race is known for its extreme challenges, prohibiting the use of modern navigation technology such as GPS and electronic devices. Competitors must rely solely on traditional instruments like a sextant, a magnetic compass, and paper charts. Communication with the outside world is also severely limited, primarily through satellite devices for short text messages.
The race, first held in 1968, saw only one finisher, Robert Knox-Johnston. Revived in 2018 and held every four years since, the competition has a history of high attrition. Out of 43 participants across the three races since 2018, only nine have successfully completed the course.
This year's edition features 29 athletes from 12 different countries, all vying to complete the demanding circumnavigation.
