TCL Unveils New Smartphone Series with Paper-Like Display for Israeli Market

Chinese electronics company TCL has announced its new P80 smartphone series, featuring AMOLED displays with its proprietary NxtPaper technology, designed to mimic the look and feel of paper. The announcement was made at the IFA trade show in Berlin. The devices include dedicated reading modes, advanced hardware, and long-term update support. TCL expects the new smartphones to launch in Israel in the first quarter of 2027, imported by c-data. Pricing for the Israeli market has not yet been announced.

The flagship model, the TCL P80 Ultra, boasts a 6.8-inch AMOLED NxtPaper display with a 1.5K resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, and a peak brightness of 3,200 nits. TCL claims a reduction in blue light emission to 2.9% without compromising image quality, and the screen is protected by Nano Crystal Shield Glass to prevent reflections. The P80 Ultra is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 7400 Elite processor, 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM, and offers storage options of 256GB or 512GB UFS 3.1. It is equipped with a 5,800mAh battery supporting 45W wired charging. The camera system includes a 50MP main sensor with OIS, a 50MP periscope telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom and OIS, an 8MP ultrawide camera, and a 32MP selfie camera. The phone is IP68 rated for dust and water resistance and meets MIL-STD-810H drop test standards.

All NxtPaper devices feature a side slider to activate reading modes, including a 'Max Ink' mode that blocks most notifications except calls and texts, and puts background apps to sleep. TCL claims this mode can extend battery life for reading up to seven days. The company also states the phones come pre-loaded with over 500 books and incorporate AI features for reading, such as converting e-books to audiobooks or podcast-like formats. TCL suggests the reduced color saturation in these modes makes apps less addictive, potentially appealing to parents seeking to limit their children's screen time.

The P80 Pro shares the 6.8-inch NxtPaper AMOLED display specifications with the Ultra but features a simpler camera setup: a 50MP main camera with OIS and an 8MP ultrawide lens, omitting the periscope zoom. Reports vary on its processor, with some suggesting a MediaTek Dimensity 7400 Elite and others a MediaTek 7300. The base TCL P80 model lacks NxtPaper technology but retains the 6.8-inch AMOLED display with 1.5K resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, and 3,200 nits peak brightness. Storage options for the base model start at 128GB and go up to 256GB.

European pricing for the TCL P80 Ultra starts at 550 euros for the 8GB/256GB version. The P80 Pro is priced under 450 euros, and the base P80 starts at 349 euros for the 128GB model. TCL had previously planned to release the P60 model in Israel last year, but it did not materialize. The company is now committed to bringing the P80 series to the Israeli market in early 2027.
