Yaakov Asher Tapped to Lead United Torah Judaism Party

A significant leadership change is reportedly underway within the ultra-Orthodox United Torah Judaism party. Sources within the party suggest that MK Yaakov Asher is expected to be appointed as the new chairman. This potential appointment comes as veteran lawmakers Moshe Gafni and Uri Maklev are not anticipated to be included in the party's list for the upcoming Knesset elections.

The possible departure of Moshe Gafni marks the end of an era for the party. Gafni has served continuously as a Member of Knesset since 1988, accumulating 38 years of service. He holds a record for seniority alongside Benjamin Netanyahu and Aryeh Deri, though unlike them, Gafni has remained in the Knesset throughout his tenure.

Yaakov Asher, 61, is a Knesset member representing Degel HaTorah, the Lithuanian faction of United Torah Judaism. He is considered one of the party's prominent parliamentarians. Asher previously served as the mayor of Bnei Brak from 2008 to 2013 and was first elected to the Knesset in 2013. During his time in parliament, he has chaired key committees, including the Constitution, Law, and Justice Committee. His potential appointment as chairman would signify a substantial generational shift in the party's leadership, following years of Gafni's dominant presence.
