Israel Prepares for Massive Passenger Surge for Uman Pilgrimage

The Israel Airports Authority is gearing up for a significant influx of approximately 24,000 passengers on over 120 flights, primarily for the Rosh Hashanah pilgrimage to Uman, Ukraine, to visit the grave of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov. This special preparation aims to manage the expected crowds and the unique needs of the thousands of travelers.

For the first time, a special directive in Hebrew and Yiddish has been drafted and will be distributed in Haredi synagogues and through travel agencies. This directive provides practical instructions for travelers, urging them to prepare in advance and adhere to the guidelines. Passengers are advised to arrive at the terminal at least three hours before their scheduled departure time. Boarding will commence one hour prior to departure, and flight check-in should be completed in advance via the airline's website or travel agents.

Wizz Air flights are expected to depart from Terminal 1, and passengers are encouraged to verify their departure terminal beforehand. Special attention is being given to luggage and food, as many pilgrims bring substantial provisions. Only standard suitcases will be permitted; cartons, boxes, coolers, styrofoam packaging, and fabric or plastic bags will not be allowed. Additionally, bags containing commercial quantities of food are prohibited.

The journey to Uman is also expected to be lengthy due to the ongoing closure of Ukrainian airspace. Flights will land in neighboring countries, from which passengers will continue to Uman by bus and other land transportation. The Israel Airports Authority is calling on the public to prepare well in advance, check flight and terminal details, and comply with baggage regulations and airline instructions to ensure an orderly and swift departure of the thousands of travelers from Ben Gurion Airport.
