Toddler Hospitalized After Accidentally Ingesting Psychiatric Medication

A three-year-old boy was rushed to an urgent care clinic in Ashdod, Israel, exhibiting extreme drowsiness and responding only to pain stimuli. Despite normal vital signs, including blood sugar, pulse, and oxygen saturation, medical staff suspected poisoning due to the child's unusual condition. The boy was subsequently transferred to a hospital, where it was discovered he had accidentally ingested "Etumine," a psychiatric medication not intended for children under 16.

Doctors were alerted by the child's lack of responsiveness and failure to urinate for several hours, which heightened their suspicion of poisoning, especially since there were no signs of head trauma or infection. The medication, a potent antipsychotic, can cause severe, life-threatening poisoning even from a single tablet, with symptoms including central nervous system depression, extreme sleepiness, difficulty waking, and urinary retention.

Following several days of hospitalization and close observation, the toddler's condition improved, and he was released home. Medical professionals emphasized the importance of not solely relying on device readings when a child exhibits abnormal behavior. They also urged parents to store all medications securely, out of children's reach, including those belonging to visitors or other family members, as accidental ingestion might not be immediately apparent.

Dr. Fadi Sabbagh, a pediatrician involved in the case, highlighted that normal vital signs do not rule out danger. He advised parents to seek immediate medical attention if a child is unusually sleepy or unresponsive. The incident serves as a critical reminder for household medication safety.
