Galilee Kibbutzim Transform Old Facilities into Vibrant Cultural Hubs
Several kibbutzim in Israel's Western Galilee are revitalizing their former communal structures, transforming them into bustling centers for culture, art, and culinary experiences. These initiatives aim to attract visitors and provide new reasons to enter the kibbutz gates, especially after the region faced significant disruption due to evacuations following the October 7th attacks.
In Hanita, a new complex has emerged on the ruins of the kibbutz's metal factory. The project, envisioned by evacuated residents, includes "Cafe Hanita" offering locally roasted coffee and artisanal sandwiches, "Gallery Givul" showcasing rotating art exhibitions, and the "Tamara Harves" studio producing natural cosmetics. The "Julius Distillery" also offers tours and tastings, while the "Wall and Tower Museum" documents the kibbutz's history and the recent evacuation and return.
Gesher HaZiv features "Lehem Tana," a renowned bakery and cafe operating in the kibbutz's former public showers, which also serves as a hub for other businesses. Nearby, "The Laundry Gallery" exhibits contemporary art and kibbutz heritage, "Shenila" is a community second-hand store supporting local projects, and "Jacques Complex" offers a culinary experience in restored British Mandate-era buildings. This complex includes "Jacques Delicatessen," a cafe and gourmet food shop, a bar and grill in the old generator building, and a bistro and wine bar in the historic dining hall.
Avronah kibbutz has repurposed its old farm buildings into "Studio Bladi" for jewelry making, "Nima" for clothing and home goods, "Matmonit" for vintage items, and "Cacao Hani" for handmade chocolates. Culinary offerings include "Acai Garden" serving acai bowls and "Darcheh" for pizza and pasta, alongside "Petit Corone," a branch of a popular patisserie.
Beit HaEmek's former laundry and shower facilities now house "Saar Bread," a bakery offering sourdough breads and pastries, and "Revital Yaacobi's" second-hand clothing store. The "GIG" studio offers fashion and custom dressmaking, and "Pop Corn" provides original gifts.
