James Tavernier Joins Maccabi Tel Aviv in Major Transfer

Maccabi Tel Aviv has signed James Tavernier, a prominent former captain and legend of Scottish club Rangers, following his successful completion of medical tests on Wednesday. Tavernier, a 34-year-old English right-back, is considered one of the most significant players to have represented Rangers in the past decade. He joined the Scottish club from Wigan in the summer of 2015, quickly becoming a key player and assuming the captaincy in 2018, a role he held for eight years.

Tavernier concluded his tenure with Rangers after 11 seasons upon the expiration of his contract this summer. Notably, he played alongside Kenny Miller, who is now Maccabi Tel Aviv's coach. Tavernier's statistics are exceptional for a defender, with 565 appearances and 144 goals across all competitions during his time at Rangers. He captained the team to a Scottish league title in the 2020-21 season, as well as winning the Scottish Cup and League Cup. He was also instrumental in their European campaign, which culminated in the 2022 Europa League final.

In that same European season, Tavernier finished as the Europa League's top scorer with seven goals, a remarkable achievement for a defender. Rangers were ultimately defeated in the final by Eintracht Frankfurt. Beyond his offensive capabilities, Tavernier was recognized for many years as the face of Rangers and one of its prominent leaders, earning induction into the club's Hall of Fame in 2023.

Since leaving Scotland, Tavernier has been a free agent, with recent reports linking him to clubs in Turkey and Major League Soccer. Maccabi Tel Aviv secures a player with immense experience, boasting over a hundred European appearances and a resume rarely seen in the Israeli Premier League.
