Northern and Gaza Border Communities Reopen Schools After Three Years

Children in communities along Israel's northern border and the Gaza border region began the new school year on Tuesday, marking the first time in nearly three years that classes have resumed as normal in these evacuated areas. The return to normalcy symbolizes the ongoing rehabilitation and resilience of these communities, which were displaced due to the prolonged conflict.

In the northern town of Metula, the "Handiv" school reopened its doors for the first time in three years, having sustained damage from Hezbollah rocket fire during the war. Residents have been relocated multiple times, but the reopening signifies a sense of security and a step towards rebuilding the community, despite ongoing military activity nearby. The head of the Metula local council noted the support from the Home Front Command in facilitating this return to civilian life.

Similarly, communities in the Gaza border region, including Kibbutz Holit, are celebrating the return of residents after nearly three years of displacement. This marks a significant phase of resettlement for the region, with communities like Kisufim, Holit, Kfar Aza, and the youth of Kibbutz Be'eri also seeing residents return. The reopening of educational frameworks is viewed as a symbol of renewal and determination to rebuild and shape a future in these areas.

Officials emphasized the importance of a strong education system for the rehabilitation and growth of the Gaza border communities. Investments are being made in improving the education system, including smaller class sizes, support for teachers and administrators, new teacher recruitment incentives, and funding for innovative initiatives. Mental health support systems are also being developed with the goal of making the education system the best in Israel.

The Police Commissioner also attended the first day of school for a young girl in Kiryat Motzkin, accompanying her and her family. Her father, a police commander, was killed in action during the October 7th attacks in Kibbutz Be'eri.
