John Malkovich to Perform in Israel Amid Global Boycott

Hollywood actor John Malkovich is set to return to Israel for a rare theatrical-musical performance titled "The Music Critic." The show will take place on April 13th at the Tel Aviv Opera House, defying the extensive global cultural boycott against Israel that began after the Gaza war. Malkovich's performance is a satirical production combining classical music by composers like Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven with "malicious" reviews and dark humor. The show is based on an idea by Russian-German Jewish musician Aleksey Igudesman, who also performs alongside Malkovich and other musicians. The performance creates a comedic conflict where Malkovich, as the critic, insults composers while the musicians respond with live renditions of their works. The show concludes with the reading of a real, scathing review written about Malkovich himself. "The Music Critic" has previously toured Europe and the United States and was released as an official music album. Malkovich expressed his excitement to return to Israel, stating, "I am excited to return to Israel and would be very happy to meet the warm Israeli audience again, to whom I feel great closeness and identification. The Israeli producer, Alon Yurik, called Malkovich's agreement to perform a "confidence-building step" towards resuming major international shows in Israel. This is not Malkovich's first visit; he previously attended the Jerusalem Film Festival in 2008 and returned in 2013 for a musical theater show, "The Infernal Comedy - Confessions of a Serial Killer," which was performed in Eilat and Tel Aviv. Malkovich, 72, is an Emmy winner and two-time Oscar nominee, known for his roles in films such as "The Killing Fields," "Places in the Heart," "In the Line of Fire," "Dangerous Liaisons," and "Con Air."
