Intel Shuts Down Israeli AI Research Unit, Citing Geographic Factors

Intel has closed its Agentic and Inference Optimization group within its Israeli research labs, terminating the 13 local employees. The company cited organizational considerations based on geographic location as the reason for shutting down the unit. Intel declined to comment on the specifics of these considerations, suggesting a potential consolidation of activities or a move to concentrate more operations in other countries.

This decision comes amidst a broader efficiency and restructuring program led by CEO Pat Gelsinger, aimed at simplifying hierarchy and reducing bureaucracy. Intel has recently reduced its vice president ranks by more than half and cut management layers. While Intel has frozen new factory construction in Israel and reduced its overall workforce there by about a quarter from 12,000 employees, it continues to hire for over 100 open positions in the country and has invested in facilities in India, the US, and Ireland.

The closed group, led by Intel senior figure Moshe Wasserblat, had been active for about a decade. It focused on natural language processing and large language models, collaborating with open-source platforms like Hugging Face. The team was responsible for breakthroughs in accelerating inference times and reducing computing costs on Intel processors, developing independent research agents, internal learning infrastructures, and reinforcement learning models for mathematical reasoning. They also published over 50 papers in leading academic journals.

The closure is seen as unusual, running counter to the industry trend of aggressive AI talent acquisition by global tech giants. Executives from companies including Meta, Microsoft, and Hugging Face, as well as individuals within Intel, have expressed surprise, given the Israeli team's significant contributions to the global AI community.
