Budapest Pro-Palestinian Protest Route Changed After Jewish Festival Backlash

A planned pro-Palestinian demonstration in Budapest was rerouted after organizers realized its original path would pass close to the Cholent Festival, a major Jewish cultural event. The proximity sparked outrage among Hungarian Jews, who viewed it as a deliberate attempt to inject anti-Israel sentiment into a community gathering.

Hungarian rapper G Ras, whose real name is Gergely Komaromi, had announced the protest under the banner "Together for Justice, from Palestine to Budapest." The initial route was set to go near the entrance of the festival, which attracts thousands of attendees.

Leaders of the Jewish community appealed to authorities, calling the planned protest a "dangerous, malicious, and ugly provocation designed to hurt the feelings of the Jewish community while Hungarian Jews gather to celebrate together." Hungary's Chief Rabbi, Shlomo Koves, stated that an anti-Israel protest intentionally entering the physical space of a local Jewish event crosses a "dangerous red line."

Following these appeals, the protest route was altered, and the demonstration did not proceed through the festival grounds. Protest organizers claimed they were unaware of the overlap beforehand and changed the route voluntarily upon learning of the Jewish event. They also apologized to anyone who felt intimidated by their intentions.

The controversy also drew in Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony, who opposed the protest's location and the public solidarity shown towards Hussam Abu Safia, director of Gaza's Kamal Adwan Hospital. Protest organizers accused the mayor of adopting the "Israeli narrative."

Ultimately, the demonstration saw participation from approximately 60 to 70 individuals, while thousands attended the Cholent Festival.
