Israel Launches New School Year With Focus on Belonging, Financial Literacy, and AI

Approximately 2.6 million students are returning to schools and kindergartens across Israel for the new academic year, with around 180,000 starting first grade. The Ministry of Education is introducing several new programs and expanding existing initiatives, emphasizing student belonging and resilience, deepening studies of identity and heritage, integrating financial education, and increasing the use of artificial intelligence in learning and assessments.

The first week of school will focus on strengthening social connections, trust between students and staff, and emotional well-being, with a particular emphasis on preventing violence, social exclusion, and bullying both online and offline. The ministry views a sense of security and belonging as crucial for academic achievement.

Key new initiatives include the introduction of financial education for ninth graders, expanding next year to tenth grade, to equip students with skills for independent financial management and critical thinking. The annual theme for the year will be "Roots of the Nation - Future, Heritage, and Initiative," aiming to connect identity and heritage with leadership and social responsibility. The "Heritage Paths" subject will also be expanded to new grades and sectors.

Artificial intelligence will play a more significant role, with the "Real Israel" reform expanding AI-focused learning and assessment methods. Over 12,000 teachers will receive AI training, and students in grades 8-9 will undergo a 20-hour AI literacy program. AI tools will be integrated into matriculation exams in over ten STEM fields, and 27 schools will offer specialized AI science majors.

In the Gaza envelope region, the school year will begin with 22,233 students, an increase of about 9% since before October 7th, reflecting the ongoing return of communities to their homes. The "Takuma Administration" is investing 364 million shekels in 2026 to strengthen the education system in the region, focusing on excellence, holistic support, and English and technology studies to foster long-term growth and attract new families.
