Unprecedented August Rains Hit Central Israel for First Time in 50 Years

The Israel Meteorological Service has reported unusual and unexpected rainfall across central Israel over the past 24 hours, a phenomenon highly atypical for the peak of summer. While minimal rain fell in the Galilee region earlier in the week, cloud cover intensified over the Gush Dan area and the Samaria region, leading to significant precipitation.

Specific measurements show Ramat Hachayal in Tel Aviv recorded 7.9 mm of rain in the last day. Ramat Gan's Blich High School station measured 3.5 mm, with other stations in Gush Dan registering between 2 to 3 mm. Mountainous areas also saw rain, with Har Bracha in Samaria recording 5 mm.

Meteorologists highlighted the rarity of these August downpours, noting that approximately 8 mm of rain in Tel Aviv during August has not been recorded in decades. This event marks the most significant urban rainfall for August since August 31, 1974, when 9 mm was measured at the Kiryat Shaul rain station.
