Treasury Officials Clash With IDF Over "Wasteful, Illegal" Budget Management

Senior officials in Israel's Ministry of Finance have launched a sharp attack against the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the defense establishment, refuting claims of ongoing foot-dragging on the defense budget. These defense officials had alleged that the Finance Ministry's delays were harming procurement processes, force buildup, and the military's readiness across all fronts.

The Finance Ministry sources vehemently denied any budget delays, instead pointing fingers at the defense leadership for alleged "wasteful management" and a refusal to become more efficient. They stated that the ministry had transferred the agreed-upon sums and was awaiting Knesset committee approvals. "The defense establishment's accusations against the Treasury are baseless and completely contrary to reality," the officials told Walla News. They emphasized that the defense budget had nearly tripled in two years, with the Finance Ministry fulfilling all budgetary agreements, often exceeding the original Knesset-approved amounts.

Furthermore, the Treasury officials argued that any potential breach of the state budget framework was not the Finance Ministry's responsibility and would require primary legislation from the Knesset, which had not yet been decided upon. They accused the defense establishment of operating outside the law and with a lack of transparency, claiming it "ignores the budget approved by law and acts as it pleases, with the Ministry of Finance having to clean up after it." The officials highlighted that the Finance Ministry has been raising billions of shekels from complex international markets for the defense establishment over the past three years, calling the current criticism "ingratitude."

These Finance Ministry sources expressed deep concern over the defense leadership's alleged inability to heed calls for responsible management of billions of shekels annually. They warned that such practices could harm the national economy and fail to provide security commensurate with the state's investment.
