Shuli Mualem Reveals Early Pancreatic Cancer Diagnosis Due to Blocked Bile Duct

Former Knesset member and journalist Shuli Mualem, who recently revealed her pancreatic cancer diagnosis, shared on social media how she discovered the disease at an early stage. She attributed her early detection to "quite a bit of luck," explaining that the tumor happened to be located at the junction of her pancreas and bile ducts, causing a blockage. This blockage led to inflammation of the bile ducts and abdominal pain, prompting her to seek medical attention.

Mualem described her experience at the clinic, where she was sent to the emergency room. An ultrasound revealed the inflammation, followed by a CT scan that led a surgeon to identify a "tumor process in the pancreas." She recounted the moment of diagnosis with characteristic self-irony, noting the high probability of cancer and her request for a tranquilizer.

She emphasized that her case is unusual, as pancreatic cancer is typically detected late, often with widespread tumors, because it rarely shows early symptoms. Her diagnosis occurred while the disease was still localized, before metastasis, a crucial window of opportunity for treatment that most patients miss.

Pancreatic cancer is known for being elusive and deadly due to the pancreas's deep abdominal location, making early detection difficult. Symptoms, when they appear, can mimic more common ailments, and there is no universal screening test. Potential warning signs include jaundice, unexplained weight loss, appetite loss, nausea, upper abdominal pain that may radiate to the back, and new-onset diabetes in older adults.

The timing of diagnosis significantly impacts survival rates. In the U.S., only about 15% of cases are diagnosed at a localized stage, with a five-year survival rate of around 44%. This drops sharply for regional or distant spread. Mualem's situation highlights the importance of chemotherapy even after tumor removal to eliminate microscopic cells and prevent recurrence.

Mualem also addressed the new drug for pancreatic cancer, described in the article as "Draxonersiv," which recently received expedited FDA approval. She stated that the drug is not currently relevant to her situation as the tumor has been removed and there are no metastases, but acknowledged its potential for advanced disease, noting it extended median survival in trials for patients with metastatic cancer.
