Maor Melikson Reveals Pressure in Choosing Between Poland and Israel National Teams

Former Israeli national team player Maor Melikson has revealed the intense emotional and professional pressure he faced when deciding whether to represent Poland or Israel. Melikson, who was born in Israel but eligible to play for Poland, explained that the Polish Football Association contacted him about playing for them in Euro 2012, with the coach and president expressing a strong desire to meet him. At nearly 27, and having not yet played an official match for Israel, Melikson considered the Polish offer, especially after a positive meeting and encouragement from his Wisla Krakow coach.

The decision was emotionally taxing, with Melikson admitting he cried and felt overwhelmed by the attention from Polish media. He expressed his love for Poland, where he felt well-treated, but his deep connection to Israel, his birthplace, and his friends playing for the national team weighed heavily. His late father also advised him to play for Poland if he hadn't yet represented Israel officially.

Despite initially telling his coach he wanted to play for Poland, Melikson ultimately chose Israel, citing his upbringing and lifelong dream to play for his home country. He felt misunderstood by the Polish side, who were upset he didn't announce his decision personally. Melikson also disclosed that financial incentives, including high offers from sponsors, were presented to him if he chose Poland, but he felt compelled to play for Israel.

Melikson acknowledged the backlash he received in Israel, with some calling him a "traitor," despite his long-held desire to play for the national team. He felt overlooked by Israeli football authorities for years, suggesting his club affiliation with Hapoel Be'er Sheva might have played a role. He also mentioned that his career at Wisla Krakow was similarly ignored by Israeli scouts.

Looking back at his club career, Melikson stated that after Valenciennes was relegated, he received multiple offers, including from Maccabi Tel Aviv, who made a lucrative bid. However, he ultimately chose to return to Hapoel Be'er Sheva, a place he knows well, expressing no regrets about his decision.
