Ex-IDF Official Warns of Eroding Military Values Amidst West Bank Incidents

Nitzan Alon, former head of the POW and Missing Persons Directorate, stated that the political echelon bears responsibility for the strategic failures preceding the October 7th Hamas attacks, calling for a state inquiry commission. Speaking to youth at a LEAD organization event, Alon also addressed a significant erosion of values within the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) during the ongoing war.

He observed that this decline is evident among some soldiers and commanders, attributing it to the prolonged conflict but also to specific incidents. Alon highlighted instances in the West Bank where soldiers allegedly stood by or even participated in illegal and immoral actions. "It is impossible not to notice this. There is significant erosion among some fighters and commanders, in IDF values," Alon stated.

Alon's remarks point to a concerning trend within the military, suggesting that the extended nature of the war and specific events are impacting adherence to IDF principles. The former official's comments underscore a call for introspection and accountability within both the military and political leadership.
