King Harald V of Norway Dies at 89 After Health Decline

King Harald V of Norway passed away peacefully on August 28, 2026, at the age of 89 following a severe deterioration in his health. The monarch, who had reigned since 1991, was recently hospitalized in Oslo due to a rare blood disease. In the last day of his life, members of the royal family visited him at the hospital, while many Norwegians left flowers at the royal palace.

Harald V was the first Norwegian-born king since the 14th century and served for 35 years, modernizing the monarchy and becoming a beloved national figure often described as the "people's king" and the nation's "grandfather." His son, Crown Prince Haakon, is set to succeed him.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog expressed condolences, praising Harald's dedication and the mutual affection between the king and his people. Harald is survived by his wife of nearly 58 years, Queen Sonja, their children including the new king Haakon, Princess Märtha Louise, and six grandchildren.
