Maccabi Tel Aviv Eliminated From Conference League After Draw With Lugano
Maccabi Tel Aviv was knocked out of the UEFA Conference League on Thursday after a 1-1 draw against Swiss club Lugano in the second leg of the playoff round. Lugano advanced with a 3-2 aggregate score, ending Maccabi's hopes of progressing further in the tournament.
Maccabi needed a goal to advance and took the lead in the 69th minute when Dor Peretz converted a penalty kick, putting the Israeli side ahead 1-0 in the match. This goal gave Maccabi renewed hope to overturn the aggregate deficit.
However, Lugano equalized in the 79th minute through Derek Moncada, leveling the match at 1-1 and restoring their aggregate lead at 3-2. Despite Maccabi's efforts in the final minutes to score again, the result remained unchanged, sealing their elimination from the competition.
