Israel Tightens Cybersecurity Regulations for New Vehicles Amid Rising Threats
Israeli government cybersecurity and security agencies are intensifying cybersecurity regulations for vehicles, reflecting lessons learned from recent conflicts with Iran that saw increased cyberattacks on critical infrastructure. The Cyber Department of the Ministry of Transportation is set to release a final version of professional guidelines for vehicle importers and service centers regarding vehicle cybersecurity, following an initial draft circulated last year. Although these finalized regulations are currently voluntary, they are expected to become mandatory for government and critical infrastructure vehicle fleets in the future.
The updated guidelines include enhanced oversight of over-the-air software updates, prohibitions on transferring sensitive user data abroad, and the implementation of encrypted protocols to protect stored data. While most new vehicles imported to Israel from July 2024 comply with international cybersecurity standards UN R155 and UN R156, Israel's unique security environment and the proliferation of connected smart vehicles necessitate stricter, localized requirements. There is also growing demand for cybersecurity measures in large private vehicle fleets, especially given access restrictions on smart vehicles within IDF bases and the defense sector.
Separately, the article highlights the ongoing surge in electric vehicle imports from China, particularly premium models. Fuel Company plans to import the Voyah PASSION electric crossover in 2027, featuring up to 637 horsepower and a range of 740 km under Chinese standards. Shlomo Motors will launch the BYD DENZA premium electric crossover later that year, offering up to 503 horsepower and a 620 km range. Carso Motors will bring the XPENG L03 compact electric crossover by the end of this year, with multiple versions ranging from 245 to 387 horsepower and up to 520 km range. Geely's premium ZEEKR brand will also introduce the 7GT electric sport wagon with up to 646 horsepower and a range of 655 km.
Additionally, Hyundai's plug-in hybrid Tucson was recently launched in Israel, combining a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor and a 13.8 kWh battery, offering up to 71 km of electric range and a combined output of 283 horsepower. The vehicle is available in two trim levels priced between 200,000 and 230,000 shekels.
The Ministry of Transportation emphasized that the forthcoming cybersecurity guidelines aim to maintain the original protection levels of vehicles throughout their lifecycle, including during maintenance and servicing, by establishing appropriate procedures for importers and service centers.
