Mossad Chief Roman Gofman Recuses Himself from Qatargate Probe Over Conflict of Interest

Roman Gofman, head of the Mossad, has decided not to be involved in the investigation of the Qatargate affair due to concerns over a conflict of interest. This decision stems from his personal acquaintance with key figures implicated in the case, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his advisor Yonatan Urich. The Israeli prosecution was awaiting a security assessment from the Mossad to determine if the Qatargate case posed any threat to national security. However, the report was delayed following Gofman's appointment as Mossad chief. Consequently, the agency assigned another professional to handle the matter and provide the necessary security opinion.

The Qatargate scandal revolves around allegations of illicit connections and the transfer of funds from the Qatari government to advisors in the Prime Minister's office during the ongoing war. The controversy began when Eli Feldstein, former security spokesperson for the Prime Minister, was found to have simultaneously worked to improve Qatar's image amid negotiations for the return of hostages. This led to a criminal investigation by the Shin Bet and police, uncovering suspicions of indirect financial channels involving American lobbyist Jay Potlik and Israeli businessman Gil Birger. These funds allegedly financed Feldstein's salary and involved hundreds of thousands of dollars transferred through companies linked to Netanyahu's communications advisor, Yonatan Urich.

About a month ago, Netanyahu gave an open testimony denying knowledge of the private dealings of his close associates, including Feldstein and Urich. Feldstein, however, described receiving direct instructions from Netanyahu related to managing public discourse about the Prime Minister's responsibility for the events of October 7. The investigation intensified following the arrest of Netanyahu's close associates on March 31, 2025. The Mossad's security opinion remains a critical component of the ongoing legal proceedings.
