Romantic Proposal in Italy Sparks Viral Dispute Over Israel-Palestine Tensions
Maor Tzabari and her partner Tal experienced an unexpected confrontation during their romantic marriage proposal in the Dolomites, Italy, after asking a content creator they met there to take photos of them. The man, named Ahmad, wore a necklace that led to a conversation about Israel and Palestine, which changed the atmosphere. Later, Tzabari discovered that Ahmad had posted a video online portraying them negatively, prompting her to release her own response video, turning the incident viral.
In an interview with ynet, Tzabari, who runs a social media business for brides, described the proposal as one of the most beautiful and intimate moments of her life. They were almost alone with the scenic view when they noticed Ahmad filming himself. Wanting some photos together, they asked him for help. Tzabari noticed his necklace and enthusiastically remarked, "See, you are in Israel," which immediately altered his expression. Initially, she thought he was Israeli but he introduced himself as Palestinian, and the mood shifted. They decided not to escalate the situation and used only a few photos before moving on.
The story took a turn when Tzabari was sent a link to Ahmad’s video, which depicted the couple as Israelis mistreating him and included his claim that he needed to apologize to Allah for filming them. Tzabari emphasized that their interaction was friendly and not hostile. She then posted her own video response in Hebrew and English, aiming to counter the negative portrayal with humor and to address broader online hostility toward Israelis. While her Hebrew video received much support, the English version attracted antisemitic backlash.
Tzabari noted that her comment on Ahmad’s original video was deleted and she has not been contacted by him. She stated that Ahmad is not the main issue but rather part of a wider phenomenon affecting many people. She dismissed him as insignificant and highlighted that many others have experienced similar situations.
The incident highlights how personal encounters can become entangled in the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict narratives, especially on social media, and how differing perspectives can quickly escalate into viral disputes.
