IDF Soldier Yehuda Katz Leaves Yeshiva With a Lasting Message Before Enlistment

During a shiva visit at the home of fallen IDF soldier Yehuda Yekutiel Katz, whose body was returned to Israel after more than 40 years, Chief Rabbi Kalman Bar shared memories from their time studying together at Kerem B'Yavneh yeshiva. Rabbi Bar recalled a poignant moment at the time of enlistment when buses arrived to take the students to their military bases. Katz briefly entered the bathroom but then returned to the study hall before heading to the bus, explaining simply, "One does not go to the army from the bathroom, but from the study hall." This act reflected Katz's deep discipline and focus, traits he maintained both in Torah study and military service.

Rabbi Bar described how Katz inspired his fellow soldiers by leading joyful dance circles before missions, embodying leadership and dedication. He also connected the return of Katz's remains to a biblical lesson, comparing it to Moses carrying Joseph's bones out of Egypt, symbolizing that true redemption requires bringing all parts home. Rabbi Bar emphasized Katz as a role model for the path of an immigrant's son who fulfilled his sacred mission in both study and service.
