Ben Gurion Airport Faces Widespread Flight Delays Amid Recovery Efforts After Chaos

One week after severe disruptions at Ben Gurion Airport, which saw thousands of passengers stuck in long queues due to a three-hour labor shift gap among baggage handlers, the airport is preparing for another busy day with over 100,000 travelers. However, this time the situation appears more controlled, with airport management and workers cooperating to avoid a repeat of last week's chaos.

Between August 19 and 25, Ben Gurion recorded 1,850 departures, but only 6.7% of flights left within 15 minutes of their scheduled time, highlighting ongoing delays. Terminal 3, the main hub with 1,465 departures, experienced an average delay of 94 minutes, higher than Terminal 1's 75 minutes for 385 departures.

Among Israeli airlines, El Al led with 610 departures and an average delay of 69 minutes, followed by Israir with 284 departures and 80 minutes delay, and Arkia with 266 departures and 116 minutes delay. Blue Bird Airways had the longest average delay of two hours and 40 minutes over 183 departures, mainly due to air traffic congestion in Greece. TUS Airways followed with an average delay of 108 minutes.

Ethiopian Airlines was the most punctual, averaging 33 minutes delay over 25 flights, with Air Baltic and Austrian Airlines close behind. The most popular destination last week was Larnaca, accounting for 7% of departures. Addis Ababa had the shortest average delays at 33 minutes, while Tbilisi experienced the longest average delays at 149 minutes, followed by Heraklion, Barcelona, Corfu, and Mykonos.

The airport continues to manage high passenger volumes while addressing staffing and operational challenges to improve punctuality and passenger experience.
