Japanese Artist Yayoi Kusama Dies at 97, Renowned for Polka Dots and Infinity Rooms

Yayoi Kusama, the celebrated Japanese avant-garde artist known for her iconic polka dots, pumpkins, and infinity mirror rooms, passed away on August 14 at the age of 97 in a Tokyo hospital. Her death was announced by her studio on August 27, highlighting her lifelong dedication to art and her continuous painting until her final days.

Born in 1929 in Matsumoto, Japan, Kusama endured a challenging childhood marked by hallucinations that inspired recurring themes in her work such as repetition, infinity, and self-obliteration. She moved to New York in 1958, where she became a provocative figure in the 1960s avant-garde scene, creating large "infinity net" paintings, phallic sculptures, and early mirror rooms. Kusama also engaged in political activism, organizing nude performances, anti-Vietnam War protests, and LGBTQ+ rights events.

Despite early struggles for recognition and claims that male contemporaries like Andy Warhol appropriated her ideas, Kusama gained global acclaim later in life. Her artworks, once sold for modest sums, have fetched millions at auction. Kusama chose to live voluntarily in a psychiatric hospital in Tokyo from 1977 onward, continuing to work daily in a nearby studio. Her mental health challenges became integral to her artistic narrative.

Kusama's international reputation soared in the 1990s with major retrospectives at institutions such as MoMA in New York and Tate Modern in London. Her immersive infinity rooms became cultural phenomena, attracting widespread public interest, including a highly successful exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art in 2021. Kusama's distinctive red wig and vibrant motifs made her one of the most accessible and popular contemporary artists worldwide. She once described herself as an outsider and expressed uncertainty about how she would be remembered after her death.
