IDF Prepares to Counter Hamas After Recent Balloon and Explosive Attempts from Gaza

In recent weeks, Hamas has launched around ten incendiary balloons from Gaza and attempted to plant explosives against Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) troops. Israeli security officials believe these actions are Hamas's response to ongoing military pressure. The IDF plans to target those responsible for the launches and the operators of the balloons, confident they can identify them due to the limited secrecy surrounding these activities.

The approval process for strikes in Gaza has been relaxed; while sensitive operations still require senior authorization, the Southern Command commander can now approve some attacks without the Chief of Staff's direct consent. Currently, the IDF controls approximately 63 to 64 percent of Gaza's territory and is gradually expanding its control. Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir emphasized that the objective remains the demilitarization of Gaza and dismantling Hamas's weaponry, preventing a return to the pre-October 7 conditions.

Earlier this week, Prime Minister and Defense Minister convened a special meeting with the Chief of Staff and senior officials to address the situation. Security officials attribute Hamas's balloon launches and potential escalation to frustration over the high rate of Israeli counterterrorism operations, which reportedly neutralize three to four militants daily, totaling about 80 per month.

Following the meeting, the IDF issued a statement warning that if the balloon launches continue, it would intensify efforts to neutralize those responsible and evacuate civilians from areas targeted by drones, balloons, and incendiary devices. However, since last Tuesday, no new balloons have been launched, after about ten were sent in the previous week and a half, including four on the most recent Saturday.
