Israeli Police Face Criticism for Unnecessary Detention of Minors in Eilat

מאת אילנה קוריאל

The story · English

Recent cases in Eilat have raised concerns about the police's discretion in detaining minors unnecessarily. One notable incident involved a 13-year-old girl who was arrested on suspicion of trespassing, assault, and insulting a public official after she locked herself in a safe room following an alleged attack. She was held in custody overnight despite having no criminal record and no clear evidence supporting the charges. Deputy President of the Eilat Magistrate's Court, Judge Shay Berger, criticized the police for their flawed judgment and the prolonged detention, stating the arrest lacked justification and the police report contained inaccuracies.

Another case involved a 15-year-old girl with intellectual disabilities who was detained overnight on suspicion of assault and threats but was not interrogated by a specialized investigator as required. She was later released to house arrest by the court. Additionally, a 15-year-old boy was detained until a family friend could escort him home after his parents were unable to arrive in Eilat, highlighting issues with police handling of minors.

Attorney Shlomo Levi, head of the Southern District Youth Department at the Public Defender's Office, condemned the arbitrary and unnecessary detentions as a systemic failure that violates juvenile law and court rulings. He called for immediate reforms and urged the Israeli Police headquarters to intervene and halt these practices at the Eilat station.

The Israeli Police responded by defending their actions, stating the 13-year-old refused to leave a private home, caused a disturbance, and threatened officers, justifying her arrest. They also noted that the 15-year-old girl was investigated following professional guidelines and that the boy's release was handled appropriately with court approval. The police emphasized their commitment to handling minors sensitively and lawfully while safeguarding their rights and welfare.
