The story · English

Yehuda Poliker, the renowned Israeli musician, is confronting pulmonary fibrosis at age 75, a serious lung condition that impairs his breathing and mobility. Despite the disease causing him difficulty walking and requiring him to use oxygen at night, Poliker continues to perform on stage, where he feels momentarily free from his physical struggles. Speaking before a recent performance at the "Hutzot HaYotzer" festival in Jerusalem, Poliker acknowledged the challenges of breathing during shows but emphasized his determination to keep singing and playing guitar.

Poliker revealed that the lung disease was diagnosed about a year ago, attributing it partly to environmental pollution in Haifa, years of working with chemicals as a hairdresser, and smoking. He described how the illness causes scarring in his lungs, limiting his ability to walk even short distances without breathlessness. Nevertheless, he refuses to quit performing, stating that music remains his greatest passion and source of strength. He also shared that he openly discusses his health struggles with his audience, calling it "another coming out."

Reflecting on his life and career, Poliker recounted overcoming childhood stuttering, family trauma from the Holocaust, and societal homophobia through music. He also spoke about his ongoing search for love, admitting he has yet to experience a fully reciprocated romantic relationship. Poliker remains hopeful and patient, quoting lyrics from his songs that express longing and resilience.

Looking ahead, Poliker plans to celebrate the 40th anniversary of his solo album "Einayim Sheli" with upcoming concerts in Tel Aviv. Medical professionals encourage him to continue performing, recognizing the therapeutic power of music. While he occasionally contemplates retirement, Poliker insists that singing and playing guitar are integral to his identity and refuses to give up the stage.

Poliker also finds solace in painting, which he describes as a calming creative outlet. He expresses no fear of death itself but worries about the suffering that might precede it. Ultimately, he embraces life and art as his means to cope with his illness and maintain hope for the future.
