Haifa Airport Struggles with Passenger Surge Amid Infrastructure Shortages

The story · English

Haifa Airport, currently served only by Air Haifa, is experiencing record passenger numbers this summer, with 58,000 travelers in July alone. However, the airport's infrastructure is struggling to handle the increased volume, leading to long queues, crowded security checks, and a lack of seating for waiting passengers. On one recent evening, staff had to bring out plastic chairs to accommodate those waiting. The airport operates with just two security checkpoints, two X-ray machines, and seven check-in counters, which are insufficient during peak times such as busy August Thursdays.

The situation worsens outside the terminal, where dozens of vehicles park illegally on sidewalks, roadsides, and open areas, blocking pedestrian and bicycle paths. The official parking lot accommodates fewer than 80 cars, forcing many travelers to park on the street and disrupt traffic flow. Currently, Air Haifa is the only commercial airline offering regular passenger flights from Haifa Airport, after other foreign and charter airlines ceased operations. Private flights also operate from the airport.

Despite ambitions to expand northern Israel's aviation sector, the airport's facilities have yet to catch up with demand. The Israel Airports Authority announced plans to build a new parking lot with 900 spaces on a 20-dunam site north of the passenger terminal to address the growth in travelers. Additionally, the authority is collaborating with Haifa Municipality to explore solutions such as a high-frequency public transport line from the city to the airport. Meanwhile, a public awareness campaign encourages passengers to use public transportation to reduce congestion. The authority emphasized that the airport's growth is a significant development for northern Israel and pledged to support improvements with all available resources.
