Haifa Airport Faces Severe Parking Chaos Amid Surge in Summer Flights

On Thursday morning, travelers arriving at Haifa Airport encountered significant parking difficulties due to heavy congestion around the airport area. With no available parking spots, many drivers resorted to parking along roadsides, sidewalks, and unauthorized areas. Passengers reported long queues and concerns about missing their flights. Yossi and Orit told ynet they had to leave their car illegally parked by the roadside to avoid being late for their flight to Cyprus, expressing frustration over the lack of prior planning for the summer travel surge.

The parking crisis stems from a sharp increase in airport activity since its reopening for full air traffic in December. Flight volumes have doubled, prompting the Airports Authority to plan a new parking lot north of the passenger terminal. This facility will cover about 20 dunams and provide approximately 900 parking spaces. However, not all nearby parking areas are under the authority's control.

In addition to the new parking lot under construction, the Airports Authority and Haifa Municipality are exploring a high-frequency public transport line from a city parking lot directly to the airport. Meanwhile, a public awareness campaign encourages travelers to use public transportation whenever possible. The authority highlighted the airport's rapid growth as a significant benefit for northern Israel, offering direct flights to Mediterranean destinations like Cyprus and Greece without needing to travel to Ben Gurion Airport.

The surge in passenger numbers is testing the airport's infrastructure amid an especially busy summer for Israeli aviation. At Ben Gurion Airport, daily passenger numbers have exceeded 100,000, with only 30.1% of flights departing on time between August 5 and 11. Average delays increased to 74.3 minutes, with 136 flights canceled and 950 delayed by over an hour, partly due to airspace congestion over Europe and Greece.
