Spinka Hasidic Leader Rabbi Shmuel Tzvi Horowitz Dies at 59 in New York

מאת משה ויסברג

The story · English

Rabbi Shmuel Tzvi Horowitz, the Spinka Hasidic Rebbe of the Beit Shmuel Tzvi community, passed away at the age of 59 after a severe illness. He died at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan, surrounded by family and with the presence of his father-in-law, the Kretshnif Rebbe, who had traveled to the United States to be by his side. Rabbi Horowitz was born into a distinguished Hasidic lineage as the son of Rabbi Yissachar Dov Berish Horowitz and grandson of Rabbi Shmuel Tzvi Horowitz, author of the "Tiferet Tzvi" and a prominent leader in the American Hasidic world.

From his youth, Rabbi Horowitz was known for his devoutness, dedication to Torah study, and fervent prayer. He married the daughter of the Kretshnif Rebbe in 1987 in a major wedding event in the U.S. He assisted his father in establishing and strengthening the Spinka institutions in the United States and succeeded him as Rebbe after his passing in 2008. Under his leadership, the Beit Shmuel Tzvi synagogue and institutions in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, became a vibrant center of Torah, Hasidut, and charity, attracting hundreds of followers.

Rabbi Horowitz was renowned for his compassionate leadership, wise counsel, and inspiring sermons that encouraged spiritual growth. He worked to publish his ancestors' Torah works and preserve the Spinka Hasidic heritage. Despite suffering from a debilitating illness in his final year, he continued to lead his community with devotion. He leaves behind a large family, including sons Rabbi David Moshe Horowitz and Rabbi Yoel, sons-in-law from prominent Hasidic dynasties, and many descendants who continue his spiritual legacy.

His funeral procession departed from his synagogue in Williamsburg, attended by numerous rabbis, rebbes, and thousands of mourners. The community mourns the loss of a revered spiritual leader. May his soul be bound in the bond of life.
