Israeli Police Disguise as Road Workers to Arrest Northern Traffic Offender in Tel Aviv

The story · English

Undercover detectives from the Nazareth police station disguised themselves as road maintenance workers, wearing bright yellow and orange vests and helmets, to apprehend a man from northern Israel involved in multiple serious traffic violations. The suspect, 33-year-old Mohammad Abu Ras from Illut near Nazareth, was caught near his workplace in Tel Aviv after fleeing police over dozens of kilometers. The officers documented his illegal driving to strengthen the case against him.

Abu Ras had long been suspected of criminal activity in Nazareth, including shooting at homes, weapons possession, and threats. Despite repeated police attempts to catch him in the act, he evaded arrest until the recent operation. Detectives tracked him driving while disqualified, filmed him, and when they revealed their identities, he fled on foot after abandoning his vehicle at a Tel Aviv construction site.

For about two months, Abu Ras avoided returning home and moved between locations in central Israel. Eventually, realizing the police were closing in, he surrendered to Nazareth police. During interrogation, he initially denied involvement but stopped responding when shown video evidence of his driving. He now faces charges including reckless driving, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, obstructing police, and driving with an expired license.

The Nazareth police emphasized their commitment to using all necessary means to arrest suspects involved in serious offenses such as shootings and violence. Prosecutors have requested his detention and license revocation until the conclusion of legal proceedings. Abu Ras’s trial is scheduled at the Nazareth Magistrate’s Court.
